Description
by the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance
While the identification of mining suppliers operating in conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs) is viewed by many as a critical early step in responsible minerals sourcing, the truth is: some of the world’s most devastating mining disasters over the last two years have occurred in countries not included on the EU's current list of CAHRAs.
In this session, we will explore the importance of undertaking due diligence by looking at factors beyond geography. We will learn from on-the-ground experts how environmental impacts are often related to threats to human rights, about the importance of hearing from communities when undertaking due diligence, and why it is not safe to assume the policies of wealthy nations are ensuring communities' rights are protected.
