Prior to this role, he was First Vice President and Associate General Counsel of one of the first digital banks in the United States—a federally chartered bank traded on the New York Stock Exchange. He began his career as an attorney in New York working at two global AmLaw 100 firms, where he was in the corporate and real estate groups, but also worked in other areas. He was also a member of the Brazil and Latin America Market teams—experience that included a stint in São Paulo with a top-tier Brazilian law firm. On the deal side, Joel has worked on complex transactions ultimately reported in the Wall Street Journal and New York’s The Real Deal. Joel also has public sector experience, having served as a Legislative Aide to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and a Staff Assistant in the Office of the Governor of California. Joel also has served as a Visiting Scholar of Stanford Law School, appointed by Dean Larry Kramer, and during law school, taught in Stanford’s Engineering School and its Political Science Department. In Spain, Joel has taught at the Instituto de Empresas. He earned an A.B. in Government at Harvard, where he also was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While earning his J.D. at Stanford, Dean Kathleen Sullivan appointed Joel to serve as the Research Coordinator for a moot court judged by then U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Joel is fluent in English (native), Spanish, and Portuguese and is admitted to practice law in both New York and California. He is presently based in Madrid.
