Transnational bribery is a key enabler of environmental crimes such as illegal logging, fisheries crimes, land clearing, and waste trafficking. Bribery allows perpetrators to bypass laws, evade enforcement, and exploit resources illegally, threatening ecosystems and sustainable development. These crimes often cross borders, requiring coordinated responses from both supply and demand-side countries. This session will explore how foreign bribery facilitates environmental crimes and examine challenges in detecting, investigating, and prosecuting these complex, cross-border offences. Panellists will discuss innovative approaches to enforcement, including strengthening the role of financial crime authorities and fostering international collaboration. The session will also address how the private sector can engage in prevention efforts, with a focus on improving transparency, accountability, and reporting mechanisms.
