BERNARDO ARÉVALO, President of the Republic of Guatemala. 2024-2028.
Member of Congress of the Republic of Guatemala (2020-2024) and Secretary-General of the Movimiento Semilla. Without previous participation in partisan politics, the political crisis in Guatemala prompted him to take on the founding of the Movimiento Semilla. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands) and a degree in Sociology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel). Until December 2019, he served as Senior Advisor for Peacebuilding at Interpeace's International Peacebuilding Advisory Team (IPAT). He has led several initiatives and programs for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Interpeace, seeking to transform the state security apparatus. He was Interpeace's Deputy Director General for Research and Development between 2011 and 2013.
Between 2005 and 2011, he was director of the Joint Program Unit of the United Nations and Interpeace with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), supporting research and dialogue strategies for peace in Israel, Palestine, Cyprus, and Liberia, among others. He was the director and head of Interspace’s Regional Office for Latin America from 1999 to 2005. Between 1996 and 1998, he participated in the management of the post-conflict consensus, following the signing of the Peace Accords in Guatemala. He served at the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more than 12 years, holding various positions, including Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to Spain. He is the author of several books and articles published in Guatemala and abroad. He is a member of the International Commission for Inclusive Peace, a global initiative that seeks to redefine peace-building strategies worldwide.
