Description

George Hyzler currently serves as Malta’s first Commissioner for Standards in Public Life by unanimous resolution of the members of the Maltese Parliament. He was appointed in that role since October 2018. A lawyer by profession, having graduated Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta and obtained a post-graduate Diploma in European Integration from the University of Amsterdam in 1980. George served as President of the Chamber of Advocates, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Malta Arbitration Centre, a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague, a member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice a member of the Judicial Appointments Committee and (non-resident) High Commissioner of Malta to South Africa. George is a former Member of Parliament, having served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Economic Services responsible mainly for competition, consumer protection, intellectual property, and standardisation. He served on the Public Accounts Committee and the Committee for the Consideration of Bills. He is credited with setting up structures to support and promote Malta’s film industry. He was the President of the University Students’ Representative Council, a member on the board of the Faculty of Laws and the University Council.
