Maia Sandu
Republic of Moldova
President of the Republic of Moldova
Description
President Maia Sandu became Moldova's first female president in December 2020. Her political career began in 2012 as the Minister of Education, a role she held until 2015. That same year, she founded what would later become the Party of Action and Solidarity. By 2019, she had been elected as Moldova's Prime Minister. A staunch supporter of Moldova's European integration, she co-signed the EU membership application in March 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In June of that year, Moldova achieved candidate status for EU accession, and launched accession talks in early 2024.
Before entering politics, Sandu advised the World Bank's Executive Director from 2010 to 2012. Earlier, she held positions at the Ministry of Economy, worked at the World Bank Office in Chișinău, and served as a consultant on governance and public administration projects.
She completed her education at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, the Academy of Public Administration in Chișinău, and Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
