Description
Alonso is a molecular biotechnologist by training, who is currently leading the Responsibility Program at the International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition. iGEM's Responsibility Program aims to ensure the safe, secure, and responsible use of synthetic biology and life sciences. His work has made him identify and mitigate potential risks of over 395 synthetic biology projects, including gain-of-function research, work with human and animal samples, work with pathogens, among others. Alonso is also a researcher who focuses on the development of dual-use risk oversight frameworks in the context of Low to Middle-Income Countries, as well as how to meaningfully engage scientists in the responsible use of science.
