Description

David is a theoretical quantum physicist from the University of Otago in New Zealand. His main research interests revolve around the use of ultracold atomic systems for the emulation of systems inspired from condensed matter physics. In 2015 he established the Dodd-Walls Centre for Quantum and Photonic Technologies as a national Centre of Research Excellence in New Zealand, involving six New Zealand universities, plus other government agencies, with a total of over 200 staff and students. He led the Centre as its inaugural Director until the end of March 2023, when he stepped down. For the past three years he has been Departmental Science Advisor with the New Zealand Government’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. He is a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Working Group on Women in Physics and is an Associate Member of IUPAP’s Commission on Physics for Development. He is also Chair of the Board of Otago Museum, one of New Zealand’s largest municipal museums.
