Description
Mr Nxesi has been the Minister of Employment and Labour of the Republic of South Africa since May 2019. He also serves as the chairman of the South African Communist Party (SACP). He has been a member of parliament for the past ten years where he performed various roles including; chair of the portfolio committee on international relations and cooperation, deputy Minister of rural development and land reform, Minister of sports and recreation and Minister of public works. A portfolio he held, until his appointment to the present role. Mr Nxesi is a former teacher and trade unionist for the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU). Between 2004 and 2009, he was the president of the Education International (EI), the largest global union in the world and was also a member of the Global Unions Council. As the EI president, his main emphasis was on workers and human rights. Mr Nxesi holds a Master’s degree in Public Management and Development.
