Biography

Damien Cottier (49) lives in Neuchâtel (Switzerland). He is a historian and geograph by training and specializes in international relations (Universities of Neuchâtel, Berlin, Graduate Institute Geneva). He has worked as chief of staff of the Swiss Federal Councillor (Minister) for Home Affairs (2010-2011) and then Foreign Affairs (2012-2017) and President of the Swiss Confederation and Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE (2014). After a spell at the Swiss Mission to the UN in Geneva, he was elected to the Swiss Parliament (National Council) in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. In 2022 he became chairperson of his political group (Liberal-Radical) and in this capacity a member of the Bureau of the National Council. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), where he used to chair the Swiss delegation as welle as the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights (2022-24). He also chairs the Switzerland-US Parliamentary Association.
