Description

Sam Usher was appointed as the first CEO of the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency in January 2022. Sam graduated with a Masters in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nottingham in 1993. He has 30 years experience in the nuclear industry, and held a wide range of Executive and non-Executive Director roles across public and private sector nuclear and radioactive waste management businesses in the UK and internationally. He has a deep understanding of the technical, operational, regulatory and stakeholder challenges associated with safely managing and disposing of radioactive waste, and has a record of developing and implementing effective radioactive waste management and decommissioning business strategies and programs.

NEA membership consists of 34 countries representing 80% of the world's installed nuclear electricity generating capacity. The mission of the NEA is to assist its member countries in maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for a safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It strives to provide authoritative assessments and to forge common understandings on key issues as input to government decisions on nuclear energy policy and to broader OECD analyses in areas such as energy and the sustainable development of low carbon economies.
