Description

Dr Takeshi Kawano is Executive Director of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), having been appointed in April 2021. He joined JAMSTEC in 1988 and has held several senior roles such as Assistant Executive Director, Director-General of the Research Institute for Global Change, and Director of the Research Center for Global Change. Dr Kawano has a research background in oceanography. He received his PhD in Engineering from Tokai University and his MEng and BEng in Naval Architecture from the University of Tokyo. He has been a Member of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO since 2017 and a Temporary Member of the Council for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology since 2015.
