Biography
Christian Buchmann has held the position of President of the Austrian Federal Council since 1 January 2021. Buchmann was born in Graz on 27 September 1962. While already in employment, he attended part-time degree courses in business administration of the University of Graz and the University of California Los Angeles, graduating in 1998. From 1998 to 2003, he was a member of the municipal government of Graz, the capital of the Province of Styria. In 2003, he became Municipal Councilor for Economic Affairs, Science and Culture. In 2005, he was appointed Member of the Provincial Government responsible for Economic Affairs and Finance. Having held the positions of Deputy Party Chairman of the Austrian People’s Party (Österreichische Volkspartei - ÖVP) and President of the Austrian Employers’ Federation (Österreichischer Wirtschaftsbund), he was elected to the Provincial Parliament of Styria in 2017. Since December 2017, Christian Buchmann has been a member of the Federal Council, serving as its Vice-President from 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2020. He is a member of numerous parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Economic Affairs and the Committee for Innovation, Technology and the Future. Since 2018, Christian Buchmann has been Chairman of the Committee on European Union Affairs of the Federal Council and head of the Federal Council’s delegation to the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC).
