Dr. Prof. Marina Shapira is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Stirling and serves as the Associate PGT Dean for the Faculty of Social Sciences. Marina Shapira holds a DPhil from Oxford University (2007), an MA in Sociology with Distinction from the University of Haifa, and an MSc/Diploma in Applied Mathematics with Distinction from Yerevan State University. She is a member of the Social Surveys and Social Statistics research group and the Stirling Centre for Research into Curriculum Making. Her research focuses on curriculum studies, educational inequalities and transitions, socio-economic inequalities, immigration, and ethnic and national identities, particularly among immigrants and ethnic minorities. Her work has received funding from organizations such as the ESRC, British Academy, British Council, and the Nuffield Foundation. She was a Principal Investigator on the recently completed Nuffield Foundation-funded project titled “Choice, Attainment, and Positive Destinations,” which examined the impacts of curriculum policies on young people’s outcomes in Scotland (2019-2023). Dr. Shapira also serves as a co-investigator on two international projects: one funded by the British Academy that explores national identities and intentions to stay among young migrants in Armenia (2020-2024), and another, funded by the British Council, that examines trends in early English language learning in basic education (2022-2025).
