Description
Jan Kosmol has been a research and policy officer at the German Environment Agency (UBA) since 2009. He works on environmental aspects of responsible business conduct in global mineral supply chains as well as more broadly on industrial metabolism and circular economy.
He provides science-based policy advice to the German government and contributes to the design and implementation of government strategies such as the German Raw Materials Strategy. In this role, he proposed and drove an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of the Environment to develop an OECD Handbook on Environmental Due Diligence in Mineral Supply Chains.
Jan holds a Diploma degree in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin with a technical specialization in the field of water pollution control. He has studied and conducetd research abroad at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal and the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Brazil.
He has authored and co-authored articles on sustainability standards in mining and mineral supply chains (2018), the environmental criticality of raw materials (2018), methods and data to determine raw material criticality (2020), nine principles for a circular economy (2020) and a monitoring framework for the use of natural resources in Germany (2021).
