Rich in mineral resources, the Andean region can play a pivotal role in supplying inputs into low-carbon technologies that are needed to mitigate global warming. The sector can also act as a growth engine in the region by creating value addition opportunities and much needed tax revenues to government coffers. However, at the local level, the sector has also been associated with environmental degradation and human rights allegations. The OECD due diligence guidance and international voluntary mining standards aim to mitigate socio-environmental risks and promote responsible mining practices.
This webinar will provide insights into comparative reviews that assess how the mining regulations in the region stack up against the OECD due diligence guidelines and the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) standard. The roundtable will discuss whether and, if so how, international standards can interact and complement national regulations to help ensure the international climate agenda can be fulfilled while local risks are mitigated.
