Description
Borko Furht is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton, Florida, and the Director of the NSF-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement.
Born in Belgrade, he completed his primary and secondary education there and earned his Dipl. Eng., Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade. He began his career as a senior researcher at the Boris-Kidric Vinca Institute.
In 1982, he moved to the United States and joined the University of Miami as an Assistant and later Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 1988 to 1992, he served as Vice President of Research at the U.S. company MODCOMP in Fort Lauderdale, where he led the development of real-time computers used by global corporations across industries such as industrial automation, energy, transportation, government, aerospace, data communications, and scientific and medical applications.
Since 1992, Dr. Furht has been a faculty member at FAU, where he served as Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering from 2002 to 2013 and as Assistant Vice President for Engineering and Technology from 2006 to 2008. His current research focuses on multimedia systems, big data, video and image coding and processing, and AI applications in industry and medicine.
Dr. Furht has been the Principal Investigator and Co-PI of several multi-year, multimillion-dollar projects, securing over $30 million in funding from government agencies such as NSF, NIH, NASA, and the Office of Naval Research, as well as industry leaders like Google, IBM, Motorola, Apple, and LexisNexis. His research areas include multimedia, video processing, and advanced computer technologies and applications.
He is the author of 43 books and over 300 papers and holds more than 100 patents. His contributions include 20 patents related to the VVC/H266 video coding standard, a technology that will be integrated into the next generation of 8K HDTV, as well as major platforms such as Netflix, Apple, Amazon, and various computers and smartphones.
In 2019, Dr. Furht was inducted into Academia Europaea, the Academy of Europe. He received the FAU President's Award for Career Achievements in 2024 and the FAU Researcher of the Year Award in both 2013 and 2019. Additionally, he was honored with the Distinguished Engineering Educator Award from The Engineers’ Council in Sherman Oaks, California, in 2019.
