Description
Dr Jennifer Williams is an Assistant Professor in Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. She is also an Associate Scientific Advisor for the Alan Turing Institute Bridge AI programme, advising small and medium-size enterprises on AI solutions in the creative industries. She recently led a winning Southampton team entry into the 2024 UK Home Office Deepfake Detection Challenge. Her research explores the analysis of trustworthy, private, and secure speech/audio technology. Dr Williams has led several large interdisciplinary teams in areas of voice anonymisation, trustworthy audio, speech paralinguistics for medical applications, and AI regulation. She currently leads a Responsible AI UK International Partnership with the UK, US, and Australia on AI Regulation Assurance for Safety-Critical Systems in the sectors of communications, aerospace and maritime. She completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh while working part-time in industry. Before her doctoral work, she was a technical staff member at MIT for five years where she developed rapid prototyping solutions for text and speech technology. She has conducted research in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. She is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Chair of the special interest group on Security and Privacy in Speech Communication for the International Speech Communication Association, and a member of NIST Organisation of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science.
