Kazuhiro Gomi
President and CEO, NTT Research, Inc.
Kazuhiro Gomi leads NTT Research, Inc. as president and chief executive officer (CEO). Mr. Gomi has been with NTT for more than 30 years and was involved in product management/product development activities at the beginning of his tenure. In September of 2009, Mr. Gomi was first named to the Global Telecoms Business Power100 — a list of the 100 most powerful and influential people in the telecoms industry. He was the CEO of NTT America Inc. from 2010 to 2019 and also served on the Board of Directors at NTT Communications from 2012 to 2019. Mr. Gomi received a MSIE from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a MSEE from Keio University, Tokyo. Mr. Gomi is a member of the board at US Japan Council, a non-profit organization aimed at fostering a better relationship between the US and Japan. He is also the president of Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Northern California.
NTT Research, which he is the president and CEO of currently, is engaged in cutting edge basic/fundamental research in the fields of a) optical computing, b) AI/Machine Learning, especially to understand how the learning process works, c) cryptography & information security and d) Cardiovascular Bio-Digital Twin, precise simulation model of each individual’s heart for medical applications.
His own technical background is in telecommunications and Human Machine Interface.
He was in charge of operating one of the largest Internet backbone services in the world, NTT’s Global Internet Network (GIN). Through the experience, he has gained technical insights into Internet protocols, traffic engineering, low layer technologies (undersea cables), and other related services realized on the Internet such as VPN and Content Distribution Networks. Another area of his strength is data centers. He oversaw the development of NTT’s global expansions of datacenter businesses. He has pretty good knowledges on the technologies required to run datacenters which covers electricity, cooling, physical security, cyber security and related resiliency designs. Also he managed to the team for web-hosting and related cloud services.
With regard to Human Machine Interface, he was a pioneer in applying voice recognition technologies into answering machines.
