Description

Shobita Parthasarathy is Professor at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan. She also directs U-M’s Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program, an interdisciplinary research, education, and public and policy engagement center dedicated to developing science and technology in the public interest. Parthasarathy’s research on developing just and equitable innovation and innovation policies has been published in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of public policy, ethics, genomics, and science and technology studies. She is the author of two books: Building Genetic Medicine: Breast Cancer, Technology, and the Comparative Politics of Health Care (MIT Press, 2007) and Patent Politics: Life Forms, Markets, and the Public Interest in the United States and Europe (University of Chicago Press, 2017). The former influenced the 2013 US Supreme Court case that determined that human genes were not patentable; the latter won the 2018 Robert K. Merton Award from the American Sociological Association. She has written for Nature, Issues in Science and Technology, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The New York Times and co-hosts The Received Wisdom podcast, which focuses on issues at the intersection of technology, science, equity, society, and public policy. Parthasarathy regularly advises government and civil society leaders in the United States and around the world. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Chicago and Masters and PhD degrees in Science and Technology Studies from Cornell University.
