Description
Karla Gonzalez Carvajal is a professional with over 25 years of experience in infrastructure investment, public policy dialogue, project management, and overall strategic leadership for development in Europe, Latinoamérica, South Asia and Africa in the Transport Sector. In her current role as Practice Manager for Transport in Eastern and Southern Africa at The World Bank, Karla leads a team serving 14 client countries with a portfolio that focuses on policy towards trade efficiencies, regional integration and Infrastructure lending in rural and urban contexts. One of her passions is the role of Transport infrastructure and policy as enablers for two agendas: Human Capital and Trade efficiencies. Since 2017, along with her peers, Karla has championed gender aspects of the transportation sector by co-building a robust platform of operations and analytical work to raise awareness about the challenges of mobility that women face as users of transportation services and to women’s participation as workers and leaders in the sector. Karla is the former Minister of Public Works and Transportation of Costa Rica and during her tenure, she achieved a fourfold increase in the investment of public works, the resumption of construction at the national airport, which was stalled due to conflicts, the transformation of the driver’s license system, the promotion of a new traffic law and the inclusion of road safety components in the design of road infrastructure. She is mother of 4 children.
