High-level Panel: Launching the Declaration on Government Access to Personal Data Held by Private Sector Entities

Dec 14, 2022 | 2:30 PM GMT - 3:15 PM GMT

Description

In the digital era, much information about individuals is collected by private entities (for example, through digital devices like smartphones or social media platforms). These data can be of high value to governments for a variety of reasons, including fulfilling their law enforcement duties or protecting national security. However, when governments access personal data, it may affect people’s privacy and may have an adverse effect on the trust that individuals vest in governments and corporations alike. Subject to its adoption in the preceding closed lunch, this high-level panel will launch the Declaration on Government Access to Personal Data Held by Private Sector Entities – the culmination of a two-year study of OECD countries’ approaches to this topic, which highlights commonalities and serves a basis for promoting trust in cross-border data flows.
