Biography
Jesse Bernstein is a dedicated human rights advocate who brings together diverse stakeholders in support of concrete solutions. Prior to joining the Office for Access to Justice, Jesse served as the Director for Human Rights at the National Security Council in the White House, where he led human rights and democracy initiatives focused on combating transnational repression, advancing LGBTQI+ human rights, racial justice, and accountability for mass atrocities in Ukraine, China and elsewhere. ​
Jesse previously has held positions at the Department of State, the UN Refugee Agency, the Norwegian Refugee Council and local legal aid organisations in contexts as diverse as Uganda, Switzerland, and Bosnia. Jesse graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2004. He earned a Masters of Science in Human Rights with Distinction from the London School of Economics in 2008 and is a Truman National Security Fellow. Jesse has published articles on refugee and human rights, including most recently on how police violence in the U.S. will affect American foreign assistance overseas.
