Biography
Zilla Jones (she/her) is an African-Caribbean-Canadian lawyer and writer based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Zilla was called to the Manitoba bar in 2012. She is a criminal defence lawyer with Jones Law Office and has appeared at all levels of court in Manitoba and the Supreme Court of Canada. She is also an instructor at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law. She is a past member of Public Safety Canada's Structured Intervention Unit implementation committee, and sits on the Board of the John Howard Societies of Manitoba and Canada.
Zilla speaks, presents and teaches across Canada on anti-Black racism and inequality in the justice system. She has presented to the Senate of Canada Human Rights Committee on solitary confinement, and has represented Canada twice at the United Nations Permanent Forum for People of African Descent. Zilla is a co-author of Canada's Black Justice Strategy. Having won numerous awards for her writing, Zilla was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts this past summer to research enslavement in Ghana.
