Biography
Esther Bogaart is the First Assistant Secretary of the First Nations and Justice Policy Division in the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department. In this role, Esther is responsible for access to justice through the delivery of federal funding to legal aid commissions, community legal centres and Indigenous-specific legal services. She is also responsible for First Nations justice, with a particular focus on shared-decision making and justice reinvestment. Esther also oversees Australia’s native title laws and policies.
Esther has worked in the Attorney-General’s Department since 2004 in various legal policy, programme and international roles. She has spent a significant amount of her career working with the legal assistance sector and on gender-based violence issues, to ensure access to justice for Australia’s most vulnerable people. Between 2018 and 2020, Esther was the Assistant Secretary, Women’s Safety and International Engagement in the Office for Women, in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. In this role, Esther engaged in a number of international fora on gender-based issues.
Outside of work, Esther is the Vice President of the Executive Committee for Karinya House for Women and Babies, which supports pregnant and parenting women in Canberra. She lives in Canberra with her husband and two teenagers.
