Hiroko Akiyama, a gerontologist, is professor emerita of The University of Tokyo and the former vice president of Science Council of Japan. She conducted many cross-national surveys and is widely recognized as an expert on issues of global aging. She is known for the long-running cohort study—tracking the aging patterns of 6,000 Japanese elderly over 35 years. She also initiated social experiments that pioneer to redesign communities to meet the needs of the aged society, and more recently Kamakura Living Lab, a platform for open innovation by co-creation among citizens, industry, government and academia. She started Institute of Gerontology at University of Tokyo in 2006.
