Marc Leemans is born in Steenhuffel, Belgium (05-03-1961). After finalising his studies at the Social Policy Section of the HISKWA (today Erasmus School) in Brussels he worked from 1983 until now at the ACV-CSC. This is the most representative union confederation of Belgium (>1 400 000 paying members).
1983-1996. He started as officer in the training and research department of the CCECL (the ACV-CSC branch union for energy, petrol and chemical sectors).
1996-1999. In 1996 he was elected as National Secretary for the chemical branch.
1999. In 1999 he became National Secretary at the interprofessional level of the ACV-CSC in charge of social legislation, social elections and the coordination of trade union action at branch and company level. During that period he was vice-chair of the National Labour Council.
2012-2023. From 2012 up to December 2023 he was the elected General President of ACV-CSC. During his presidency he was member of the so called “Group of 10”, the national negotiators for the national collective interprofessional agreements. As ACV-CSC president he was Regent of the Central Bank of Belgium.
When he stepped down as President he was succeeded by Ann Vermorgen (2024-…).
Today he continues to work at the international level. He is an active member in the International Trade Union Confederation, Vice-president of TUAC (Trade Union Advisory Committee OECD), Chair of the Workers’ Group in the Committee on the Application of Standards of the ILC of the ILO.
