Enabling Higher Wages for Garment Workers Through Purchasing Practices: Case Studies from Vietnam and Bangladesh

Feb 14, 2025 | 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Description

Organised by: Fair Labor Association (FLA), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) This session will explore the efforts of various stakeholders working to improve wages in the garment and footwear sector, focusing on two projects led by FLA and funded by GIZ, which demonstrate how collaboration between brands and suppliers can promote fair wages and better working conditions. It will examine the gap between legal minimum wages and living wages, emphasizing how purchasing practices—such as fair pricing, long-term partnerships, and predictable order volumes—can help close this divide. The session will also reflect on the broader challenges of integrating these practices into different local contexts, highlighting the importance of incorporating worker perspectives into wage-focused initiatives to ensure that their voices drive meaningful change. Ultimately, the discussion will highlight how these collective actions can pave the way for more sustainable and equitable wage systems. More information and registration
