OECD Forum on Due Diligence in the Garment and Footwear Sector

Root causes of caste-based slavery and exploitation in South Asia and how to start tackling them

Feb 14, 2025 | 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Description

Organised by: International Dalit Solidarity Network, ARISA and Homeworkers Worldwide If you are sourcing textiles or leather from South Asia and want to combat forced labour, child labour and exploitation, this is a side-event you do not want to miss. Studies have found that over 80% of those working in forced labour and child labour in South Asia are Dalits, from the lowest castes, or indigenous groups and the worst pay and conditions are often in the informal lower tiers of the value chain. Speakers from the communities deeply affected and organisations working specifically on garments and leather, will provide insight into the mechanisms that enable slavery and exploitation in garment and footwear supply chains in South Asia. They will help you identify the risks that affect companies sourcing from this region and give invaluable insights into taking concrete action to start tackling these risks today.
