Description

On May 2021 Italian Prime Minister has appointed Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni to the helm of the “Security Intelligence Department” (DIS), the department that deals with coordinating the activities of the Italian intelligence. Former Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Italy, after holding the post of Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, from June 2015 to May 2016. Born in Rome in 1958, Ambassador Belloni studied Political Science at Luiss Guido Carli University of Rome and joined the Foreign Service in 1985. In August 1986 she was seconded to UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) in Vienna. As Second Secretary in the Office for the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe CSCE (1989-1992), she represented Italy at the Vienna Negotiations as Deputy Head of Delegation for CSBM (Confidence and Security Building Measures). She was also Member of the Italian Delegation to the Helsinki Meeting on CSCE negotiations (1992). She was First Secretary at the Italian Permanent Mission to the International Organisations in Vienna (1993-1996) and Head of the Economic and Commercial Office in the Embassy of Italy in Bratislava (1996-1999). Back to Rome, she served as Chief of Cabinet to the Under-Secretary of State in charge of European Affairs (2002-2004). As Head of the Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2008, she was in charge of the Italian response to major international crisis and natural catastrophes, including the Tsunami. From July 2008 to December 2012 she was Director General for Development Cooperation in the Italian Foreign Ministry. From January 2013 to June 15, 2015 she was Director General for Human Resources, Budget and Innovation in the Italian Foreign Ministry. She was promoted to the rank of Ambassador in January 2014. In March 2024 she has taken over the post of Sherpa for the G7 and G20. She speaks English, French, Spanish, with a basic knowledge of German.
