Biography
Elena de Jesús is a statistician at UNSD, focusing on migration statistics and data innovation. She supports the UN Expert Group on Migration Statistics and has contributed extensively to the recently revised UN Recommendations on Statistics of International Migration and Temporary Mobility. Her 15-year career at the UN has been dedicated to sustainable development, including monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals, statistical capacity building, and intergovernmental support and coordination.
She has supported numerous intergovernmental processes, including the UN Statistical Commission, the High-level Forum on Sustainable Development, the Committee on NGOs, the Commission on Sustainable Development and Rio+20, among others. She has also enjoyed working directly with national governments to respond to their capacity building needs.
Before joining the UN, Elena gained experience in the private sector and academia as a software developer. She holds an MS in Computer and Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania and an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
Outside of work, Elena is passionate about Brazil, rock climbing, cooking, gardening, dance and personal development. A dedicated lifelong learner, she seeks to use data and AI to further positive change in the world.
