Biography

Fernando Marani has been a Program Director at New York University’s Center on International Cooperation (CIC) since February 2024. Before this role, he served as Legal Adviser and Deputy Chef de Cabinet to four Presidents of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly from 2020 to 2023. A staunch advocate for multilateralism and diplomacy, he worked for 20 years as a career diplomat from Argentina, actively engaging in international law, human rights, sustainable development, and youth issues since 1997. He served as Legal Adviser at the Embassy of Argentina to The Netherlands and at the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the United Nations. In the latter role, he facilitated the first Pathfinders’ Member States joint statement in support of SDG16+ during the 2019 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). In his career he held key diplomatic roles, including as Legal Adviser at the International Court of Justice, Chairman of the Special Commission of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, Co-chair of the LGBTI Core Group in New York and Chairman of the Group of Friends of the International Criminal Court in New York. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Argentina. Fernando was a scholar at the National Foreign Service Institute (ISEN) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and an international fellow at the Rio Branco Institute in Brasilia, Brazil. He is fluent in Spanish, English, Portuguese, Dutch, and French, with basic proficiency in Italian and Chinese.
