Population ageing will increase spending on pensions, health and long-term care (LTC). At the same time, working-age populations are shrinking, which means that larger burdens are placed on working-age populations. LTC is largely provided informally by unpaid carers who are predominantly women.
• What are the main barriers countries face in moving towards long-term financial sustainability in light of population ageing, and how can reform be facilitated?
• In light of ongoing and impending care needs, how can governments better value unpaid care – predominantly performed by women – during the working life and during the pension years?
