Social Policy Ministerial Meeting and High-Level Policy Forum

Session 1 - Ageing, longevity and the demographic transition: a new generational contract?

Feb 13, 2025 | 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM

OECD Conference Center and online

Session description

Population ageing will increase spending on pensions, health and long-term care (LTC). At the same time, working-age populations are shrinking, which means that larger burdens are placed on working-age populations. LTC is largely provided informally by unpaid carers who are predominantly women.

• What are the main barriers countries face in moving towards long-term financial sustainability in light of population ageing, and how can reform be facilitated?
• In light of ongoing and impending care needs, how can governments better value unpaid care – predominantly performed by women – during the working life and during the pension years?
• What can be done to help people better balance work and family responsibilities?
