What works? Global evidence on effective mitigation strategies

OnlineNov 18, 2024 | 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Description

To achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, significant emission reductions will be needed in the coming years. Policymakers need to know which policies and policy mixes work. However, there is a gap in policy evaluation; most empirical research only focuses on the effects of a few prominent policies, leaving many others under-evaluated or overlooked. This session discusses ways to close the evaluation gap and provides evidence-based policy recommendations to enable better climate policies for better lives.

The Climate Action Monitor 2024

This year's edition presents a comprehensive evaluation of net-zero targets, major climate-related hazards, and the key trends in climate action. Directed towards policy makers and practitioners, the findings suggest that current 2030 commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are not ambitious enough to meet the Paris Agreement temperature goals, and that without a significant expansion in national climate action, countries will not be able to meet the net-zero challenge.

Climate policies that achieved major emission reductions: Global evidence from two decades

This paper identified 63 successful policy interventions with total emission reductions between 0.6 billion and 1.8 billion metric tonnes CO2. Its insights on effective but rarely studied policy combinations highlight the important role of price-based instruments in well-designed policy mixes and the policy efforts necessary for closing the emissions gap.
